外教社在2002年初對中國12000名大學(xué)非英語專業(yè)學(xué)生進(jìn)行廣泛的調(diào)研，了解當(dāng)今中國大學(xué)生感興趣的閱讀話題，通過這次可能是迄今為止該類項(xiàng)目在中國境內(nèi)大規(guī)模的調(diào)研，篩選出了120個話題。以此為基礎(chǔ)，外教社在2002年7月推出了一套全新理念指導(dǎo)下適合中國大學(xué)生學(xué)習(xí)的《大學(xué)英語創(chuàng)意閱讀》。全套書共6冊，每學(xué)期一冊；配有教師用書。
注重世界不同文化的對比，以喚起學(xué)生的本土文化意識、全球意識和跨文化交流意識；練習(xí)設(shè)計(jì)形式多樣，以生動、有趣并富有挑戰(zhàn)性的練習(xí)項(xiàng)目讓學(xué)生學(xué)會如何更好地使用英語；一改以往在課文后利用詞表形式羅列單詞的傳統(tǒng)方式，而設(shè)計(jì)為通過練習(xí)，使學(xué)生掌握詞匯用法、記憶單詞；著重培養(yǎng)學(xué)生學(xué)習(xí)的主觀能動性，使學(xué)生從被動閱讀轉(zhuǎn)為主動獵取語言素材之外的多種信息，旨在讓學(xué)生創(chuàng)造性地使用英語，培養(yǎng)他們的創(chuàng)造性。
