Inventory refers to the stock of goods that are maintained for a variety ofpurposes， such as for resale to others， as well as to support manufacturing orassembling processes. 1
Inventory is the key issue to supply chain management success. Customersdemand that their orders be shipped completely， accurately and on time， whichmeans having the fight inventory at the fight place and fight time.2Inventory Classifications
It is important to know the key classifications of inventory because theclassification influences the way of inventory management. Inventory is mainlyclassified into cycle stock， safety inventory， in-transit inventory and dead inventory.
Cycle Stock
Cycle stock refers to inventory that is needed to satisfy normal demand duringthe course of an order cycle （See Figure 3-2）. If demand and lead time are constant，only cycle stock is necessary.
Safety Inventory
Safety inventory refers to inventory that is held in addition to cycle stock toguard against uncertainty in demand and lead time （See Figure 3-2）. Generally， thehigher the safety inventory， the better a firm's customer service. It is because thefirm suffers fewer "stockouts".3
