Since the publication of the Minimum Nutritional Requirements for Chinese in 1938, Chinese experts have been reviewing the scientific research progress periodically to update nutrient recommendations for Chinese. The main goal was to prevent nutrients deficiency. In 1952, 1955, 1962, 1981 and 1990, five versions of Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) were published. The Chinese Dietary Reference Intakes (Chinese DRls) was launched by the Chinese Nutrition Society in 2000. The new version of the Chinese DRls (2013) was released as an essential evidence-based guide in prevention of malnutrition and non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
The Chinese DRls (2013) consists of 3 parts: introduction, energy and nutrients, water and non-nutrient components. This version has been mainly modified in 5 areas compared to Chinese
DRIs (2000):
1. Evidence based-nutrition research data are systematically reviewed. In the introduction part, revised methodology was described. Meta-analysis, randomized control trials and cohort studies were mainly referred to as evidences.
2. The Estimated Average Requirement (EAR)/Recommended Nutrient Intake (RNI) and Average Intake (AI) were based on current data. Chinese research data has been preferentially used in the revision of Chinese DRls (2013).
3. Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Range (AMDR) and Proposed Intakes for Preventing Non-communicable Chronic Diseases (PI-NCDs) have been firstly introduced in Chinese DRIs (2013) to meet the increasing needs in NCDs prevention.
4. Apart fiom water and dietary fiber, 19 non-nutrient components in foods have been reviewed in Chinese DRls (2013). The SPLs and Uls have been firstly established for 6 components, respectively.
5. Detailed applications of the DRIs were described for health professionals, policy makers, food industries, related persons and organizations in practice to improve health status of Chinese residents.
